Radio North History

John K. PheenyIn 1990, Motorola Communications and Electronics restructured their distribution and service functions, moving to a dealer based model. In response to this shift, The Radio North Group Inc. was founded as one of the first, authorized, Motorola two-way dealers to service Northern Vermont and New Hampshire. Formed by John K. Pheeney, with a 23 year Motorola sales career spanning areas in Chicago, Minneapolis and now upper New England, along with two former members of Motorola’s commercial and government sales groups proceeded to become the leading supplier and servicer of communications systems and solutions in the area over the subsequent 25 years.

Radio North’s experience in designing complex communications dispatch systems can be seen at work in the area of Public Safety in Hanover and Lebanon, New Hampshire as well as the Police, Fire and Highway departments in Hartford, Windsor and Woodstock, Vermont. Radio North’s work on installations and upgrades can also be found with the communications systems of the Burlington Public Safety building, South Burlington Police, Milton Fire and Green Mountain Power. Recently, Radio North designed and completed dispatch systems for new facilities in Essex Junction, Williston, Winooski and Montpelier.

Radio North prides itself on providing innovative solutions to the challenges of a changing and complex communications landscape. Students at a local college can now use a GPS tracking system to locate campus busses en route. Bellhops, food service and maintenance personnel of a Stowe hotel utilize multiple radio repeaters to better ensure they can meet the needs of a discerning clientele. Dispatchers at a major ski resort make use of multiple repeaters, bases and GPS technology to keep in constant communication with groomers, lift operators and ski patrol. Knowing their exact locations in the event of an urgent situation enables the dispatch of the nearest emergency responders in a timely manner.
